Debunking Myths: What you need to know about your Liver

One of the most vital organs in the human body is the liver. We can also call it “bodies built” which is  a natural detox center; it has more than 500 essential functions.

Myths you know :

  •  Liver detoxes are essential to cleanse liver .
  • Drinking alcohol in moderation is always safe for liver .
  • Alcohol is the only thing that damages the liver and cause fatty liver.
  • You can regenerate healthy liver by medication .
  • A healthy gut guarantees a healthy liver.
  • Liver disease only affects older people .

Why good liver matters?

1. The liver plays a crucial role in detoxifying harmful substances and producing proteins that maintain our overall well-being.
2. It also helps to remove toxins from the blood and breaks down. Medicines also metabolize alcohol.
3. Apart from this, the liver is also responsible for most of the nutrient metabolism in the body, such as storing vitamins (vitamins like A, D, E, and B-complex) and minerals (zinc, selenium, magnesium, iron, copper, and potassium). It also stores excess glucose as glycogen and secretes bile to aid in fat digestion.

4. In essence, the liver is continuously workingeven when we sleep—to keep internal balance.

Poor liver condition may cause fatty liver (“non-alcoholic fatty liver disease” -NAFLD and “alcoholic fatty liver disease”- AFLD, NAFLD further categorized into simple fatty liver NAFL and “non-alcoholic steatohepatitis”- NASH), hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver failure. Also, it creates skin problems like acne.

Tips for a Healthy Liver :   

1. Greed-up  your meal with a balanced diet.
2. Stay hydrated; aim to drink at least 2-3 L of water per day.
3. Exclude processed foods & refined carbs from your regular meals.
4. Avoid consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and smoking.
5. Engage yourself in at least 30 minutes of regular exercise.
6. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep at night to heal the body effectively.

7. Managing stress is very important because it can lead to hormonal imbalances .                           

 Before starting liver friendly diet, always consult a certified nutritionist and remember that health is your first priority.
